We were all in shock this past week upon getting the news that Art Lundy, the first Ireland Supporters Club President, had passed away on February 5th, 2012. The funeral was held on Friday February 10th, 2012 with the wake in the Club the same day. The attendance and the generosity of spirit was so overwhelming that one had to ask, who was this man? Art, as I have already mentioned, was the Club’s first president, he was also a co-founder and long time participant at the Club. Art was also behind the formation of the Gaelic Language classes, that continue today, with the assistance of Seamus de Creag. Sadly Seamus passed away this past January. Art we also knew as a musician. As members of the Club we could stop there, but if you were in attendance at his funeral you would now know the Art was much more. We were humbled to be introduced to that part of Art very few of us knew and this was thanks to his son, his brother and his nephew. Art as a Father, Art as a young man and Art as an uncle, all of these memories and emotions will stay in our hearts forever. Slan leat, ar dheis De go raibh a ainm dilis.

“March”ing On

The month of March looks like it will be extremely busy, with the Saint Patrick’s Day after parade party at the Club. We have entertainment with the Irish Rogues and the Kelly School of Irish Dance. Irish Stew will be available. On the 17th, the Club will be open from 11 a.m. with the entertainment starting at 3:30 p.m. and continuing until the wee hours. Celtic Storm and Malachy Kearns providing the afternoon music and the Kelly School of Irish Dance back once again. The evening entertainment will be provided by Tommy Porter and Declan Kidd. Irish Stew is available during the day.

On Sunday, March 25th we will be holding a benefit for Art Lundy. Please keep you eye out for further information as we expect this to be a HUGE event.

Closing out the month there will be a steak dinner sponsored by our friends at RONA, Mississauga.

“SPRING”ing Forward

We have almost reached the end of January and we will have to wait until Groundhog Day (Feb 2nd) to find out how much longer Winter has left. The Club has several events planned for the coming months beginning with the Robbie Burns night on January 28th. This will be followed by a “Bring you Neighbour” games night on on February 4th and our Valentines Day Dance on the 11th. Tickets for the Valentines Day dance are on sale for $35 with dinner being provided by Executive Chef Shawn G. Whale, Owner/Culinary Director – Liaison College Toronto West and Captain of Culinary Team Canada 2009 – 2013.

New Year’s Eve Party

The 2011/2012 New Year’s Eve Party turned out to be one fantastic night of food and fun. We had an unusually small group, approximately 50, people celebrating the birth of 2012. The food, provided by Robert Fowles, was exceptional and the entertainment, equally good, was the Original Replay Band.

It has been a difficult year economically for everyone and, having discussed this event with a number of members since, it would seem that the format should change if this event is to continue. The Committee will be discussing this at future meetings and, as always, we would request your feedback.

Christmas at the Club

It has been a very busy Christmas schedule to date for the club. The Children’s Christmas Party, organised by Vanessa O’Connor and Sheryl Callow, was a tremendous success with over 70 kids present and of course our own Santa Clause (Gerry Larkin). The entertainment was provided by DJ Kenny. Christmas Eve was equally successful with Tommy Porter providing the entertainment and with the aid of Declan Kidd drawing the winners of our Christmas Eve raffle. The winners were;

1) Jenny Russell (12 karat gold braided stone bangle, donated by the Claddagh House

2) Sheryl Callow (Embassy hemstitched linen tablecloth, donated by the Hearns family)

3) Sue Connolly (Aran knit jacket, donated by Fiona Gowland).

An additional prize of a Christmas Basket (donated by Bentall-Kennedy) was added on the day and was won by Diane Morley.

The Committee would also like to extend our thanks to Mike Shanahan, EM Graphics, for the donation of the raffle tickets for this draw and the many other tickets he seems to produce miraculously upon request.

As we move on through this season we would like to wish you all a very Happy and Healthy New Year.

Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year to all of our members.

This is the busy time for our Club with a number of functions taking place over the coming month. Please do not forget the New Year’s Eve party with entertainment by the Original Replay Band. The tickets for New Years will be available shortly, but you can sign-up at the Club this weekend. Tickets will be available to members only, until December 18th, 2011 and to non-members thereafter. The cost will be $70 per person which includes dinner and the aforementioned entertainment. Christmas Eve will also be a fun afternoon with Tommy Porter on hand to regale everyone and the draw for those wonderful prizes advertised will take place also, tickets are still available from behind the bar or from any Committee member.
