Golf Society Handout – 2012

 Ireland Supporters Club Golf Society

 2012 Season Handout

Fellow Member,

On behalf of the Golf Society Committee we extend a warm welcome to the Society and assure you that the 2012 season will once again be an enjoyable experience. At this stage we are anticipating all events being crossovers. This makes it easier for everybody to come back to the club, compare scores and stories, enjoy a beverage and as always food will be available at a nominal cost.

We have worked diligently to provide top quality courses at a very reasonable price for our tournaments. Many of you will be glad to see some of our traditional stops on the ISCGS tour – Cambridge and Springfield back on the schedule.

We hope that this handout provides the information which will allow you plan for our 2012 events and, in the case of new Members, gives sufficient information for you to understand the various procedures associated with registering, paying and attending events. Please note that updates and general information relevant to the Golf Society are posted on the Ireland Supporters Club web site, www.irelandsupportersclub.ca

The handout contains the following:-

  • Laminated wallet sized card showing the dates and venues for all Golf Society events for 2012.
  • Schedule that provides relevant dates for signing-up and paying for events.
  • Methods of payment for events.
  • Match Play and Golfer of the Year details.
  • Handicap and Rules information
  • Names and Email addresses of the Golf Society Committee
  • Phone numbers of Golf Courses where events are planned.

We all look forward to an enjoyable and successful 2012 golfing season

The Committee

On behalf of the Ireland Supporters Club Golf Society

Overview of what is organized during the season

The Golf Society season starts in April and finishes in October, weather permitting. One event is organized each month. Usually we have made long term arrangements with the Golf Courses to reserve 20 tee-off times, which means we can accommodate 80 golfers. To maintain a good relationship with the Golf Courses we agree to confirm the number of players one week before each event. To facilitate this the closing date for signing-up is the Sunday 13 days before an event. To give Members a reasonable opportunity to indicate their intention to play a sign-up sheet will be posted on the Golf Society Notice Board on the Thursday 4 weeks before the event. (The Golf Society Notice Board is at the back of the Club on the wall facing the Gents washroom.)

Who do you play with?

For most events you can chose to make up your own 4 ball. Each 4 ball will comprise those whose names are written in the 4 columns of the sign-up sheet. Past experience has shown that some Members will put down the name of other Members but not let the other person know. This can cause confusion so, please, make sure to inform the other person that you have committed them to playing in the event.

As was the case in previous season’s, names will be drawn at random to make up the 4 balls for the Captains Day event at Pipers Heath in August and Copetown Woods in July.

The Fall Classic is a Team event and names will be drawn randomly to create teams.

The 2012 stroke play event will take place in June this year at Willow Valley,

What time do I tee-off?

Tee-off times are drawn at random. The draw takes place at the Club on the Sunday when the sign-up sheet is taken down at 4.00 p.m. A hand written notice will be put on the Notice Board that day and a typed version will be posted the following Thursday. The Golf Society has access to the Ireland Supporters Club web site and the tee off times will also be posted on the site. Our aim is to have this available on the Monday before an event.

2012 Green Fees

We have negotiated some favourable green fees with each of the venues that we are playing on that day, and that will be the price charged to the members. These fees may or may not include taxes, carts etc. and you should check with the notice board for each specific cost that is payable to the Society.

Method and Timing of Payments

Payment for an event must be made two (2) weeks before the event.  The bottom line is that if you haven’t paid when the draw is being made then you will not be included in the draw. The Society in many cases has to commit to a specific number of players PRIOR to the event and that includes financial commitment.

The following methods of payment are available:

  • Post Dated Cheque – At any time during the Season a member can submit post-dated cheques.  If that option is chosen then the cheques should be dated for the Sunday 13 days before the event. It is important to remember to put your name on the sign up sheet to confirm your intention to play. Do not put someone else’s name on there unless you are paying for them at that time.
  • Cheque – These should be placed in the Golf Society mailbox (the brown box on the wall at the north end of the bar) in the Club and be dated no later than the Sunday 13 days before the event. Cash is acceptable but it is always easier to have an audit trail of a cheque payment in case of any problem arising.
  • Email Transfer – Those who may want to use an on-line banking facility or Email transfer of funds should get in touch with Kevin Arey and he will be able to provide details on how the process works.

If you pay for an event and don’t play you will lose your money only if the Golf Course charges the Golf Society. If the Golf Society is not charged the green fee, your payment will be offset against the next event you play in or refunded to you. The contract at most of the courses includes a clause that we will be charged for the number we confirm 8 days before an event

At the end of the 2012 Season the Golf Society Champions will be the male and female golfer who accumulates the highest number of Stableford points from the qualifying Society events played during the season.

In the event of a tie, the Golfer of the Year will be decided by a tiebreaker played at [venue to be determined] the day of the Fall Classic.  Should one of the competitors be unable to play on that day the committee will decide on the venue.

ISC Golf Society

Handicap Policy for 2012

For male members, excluding seniors (over 70 years old), the maximum handicap index will be 28 and the maximum index for ladies is 36.

New members will normally be given a handicap by the Handicap Committee. The onus is on them the new member to provide the Handicap Committee with any information, such as an OGA handicap to assist in assigning a fair handicap.  Once 3 – 5 tournament cards have been submitted, the handicap system will determine their handicap. Their handicaps will be reviewed after each tournament and may be adjusted up or down at the handicap committee’s discretion based on cards submitted or any other further information received. Seniors may play from the forward tees but will have to declare their intention to do so to the handicap committee at least two weeks prior to the event.

Handicap Adjustments:

Handicaps will be adjusted based on how a player performs vs. the course rating. Slope will also be used for this calculation. The adjustment is based on the player’s handicap.

For most men they will be cut 0.3 or 0.4 shots per stroke net under the course rating. Handicaps are adjusted upward by 0.1 shots per round above the course rating plus a buffer, which for most men is 3 or 4 strokes.

For most women, the cut will be 0.5 shots per stroke net under the course rating. Handicaps for women are adjusted upward by 0.1 shots per round above the course rating plus a buffer, which for most women is 5 strokes.

These handicap adjustments will apply in all society tournaments and in a match play tournament. In match play the full differential in handicaps is used.

IN ADDITION……..

The handicap committee will have the discretion to adjust system-generated handicaps when they have reason to believe that a member has not been submitting scores for all rounds (except match play rounds) played between April 01 and October 31st. They also have the discretion to adjust handicaps when they have good reason to feel that the system-generated one is not appropriate.

We hope these provisions will make for keen and equitable competition in the coming season; now go out and have a good time.

Appreciation Night, Sponsored by RONA

The Club owe a big debt of gratitude to Bill and Elizabeth Graham of RONA, Mississauga for their donation of food and time on Saturday night March 31st, 2012. Bill and Elizabeth not only donated all of the food, but with a number of members of their management team, prepared and cooked for a total of 155 hungry individuals.

Their generosity is not just the Irish way, but the community way, and RONA and the Ireland Supporters Club are members of a great community here in Mississauga. For more photographs of a great night click on the following link, RONA Night.

Photos…Photos, and More..

I have been somewhat remiss of late due to vacation and a very busy Club. There have been a number of events over the past couple of months where photographs were taken but have never been published. So here we go; first up was another great Robbie Burns Night back in February, followed by the Golf Society Putting Tournament, then St. Patrick’s Day. We also have had the mural on the stage at the back of the Club redone and these photos will take you from what was to what is. For all of these photos please check the Photo Gallery on this website.

This past weekend we had a benefit for Art Lundy who was taken from us quite suddenly. The Club wishes to thank all it’s members for their generosity and assistance in making this a great and worthwhile day. We would also like to extend our thanks to Jim and Philomena McGuinness, who represented Lar Na nGael in Brampton, Tommy Donnelly from the Brogue, Frankie Benson and Eamonn O’Loughlin for their generosity.

An Tánaiste Eamonn Gilmore

It was a great pleasure for several of our Committee and spouses to have the opportunity to meet with An Tánaiste Eamonn Gilmore this past Sunday, March 18th, 2012 at the Brampton Irish Center. In addition to Mr. Gilmore we also met with his wife Carol and the Irish Ambassador to Canada Ray Bassett.

We would very much like to extend our thanks to the Executive of the Brampton Centre for the invitation, warm welcome and a much needed breakfast after our St. Patrick’s Day at the Club.

IN MEMORIAM

We were all in shock this past week upon getting the news that Art Lundy, the first Ireland Supporters Club President, had passed away on February 5th, 2012. The funeral was held on Friday February 10th, 2012 with the wake in the Club the same day. The attendance and the generosity of spirit was so overwhelming that one had to ask, who was this man? Art, as I have already mentioned, was the Club’s first president, he was also a co-founder and long time participant at the Club. Art was also behind the formation of the Gaelic Language classes, that continue today, with the assistance of Seamus de Creag. Sadly Seamus passed away this past January. Art we also knew as a musician. As members of the Club we could stop there, but if you were in attendance at his funeral you would now know the Art was much more. We were humbled to be introduced to that part of Art very few of us knew and this was thanks to his son, his brother and his nephew. Art as a Father, Art as a young man and Art as an uncle, all of these memories and emotions will stay in our hearts forever. Slan leat, ar dheis De go raibh a ainm dilis.

“March”ing On

The month of March looks like it will be extremely busy, with the Saint Patrick’s Day after parade party at the Club. We have entertainment with the Irish Rogues and  the Kelly School of Irish Dance.  Irish Stew will be available. On the 17th, the Club will be open from 11 a.m. with the entertainment starting at 3:30 p.m. and continuing until the wee hours. Celtic Storm and Malachy Kearns providing the afternoon music and the Kelly School of Irish Dance back once again. The evening entertainment will be provided by Tommy Porter and Declan Kidd. Irish Stew is available during the day.

On Sunday, March 25th we will be holding a benefit for Art Lundy. Please keep you eye out for further information as we expect this to be a HUGE event.

Closing out the month there will be a steak dinner sponsored by our friends at RONA, Mississauga.

“SPRING”ing Forward

We have almost reached the end of January and we will have to wait until Groundhog Day (Feb 2nd) to find out how much longer Winter has left. The Club has several events planned for the coming months beginning with the Robbie Burns night on January 28th. This will be followed by a “Bring you Neighbour” games night on on February 4th and our Valentines Day Dance on the 11th. Tickets for the Valentines Day dance are on sale for $35 with dinner being provided by Executive Chef Shawn G. Whale, Owner/Culinary Director – Liaison College Toronto West and Captain of Culinary Team Canada 2009 – 2013.
